What is agentic trading? Evaluate the workflow and its authority

An agent can investigate a trading question without permission to trade. Evaluate its workflow and authority separately.

The key distinction

Agentic trading uses model-directed tool use and feedback to carry out trading-related tasks. That describes an operating process; it does not establish predictive skill, profitability or permission to execute.

What makes a workflow agentic?

The reader question is straightforward: what extra capability does an AI trading agent provide beyond a chatbot or a programmed strategy? Our working definition is a system that can choose trading-related investigative steps, use tools, inspect results and adjust its next action. The task could be research, reconciliation or preparing a proposal. It need not include sending an order.

Definitions vary. Anthropic distinguishes fixed, coded workflows from agents whose models direct their processes and tool use. That is a useful architectural distinction, rather than an industry certification. A fixed sequence of model calls can still be valuable; an adaptive sequence can still be wrong. [1]

Assess two separate dimensions

A useful evaluation separates capability from authority. Capability concerns what a system can establish: identify missing inputs, compare experiments, retrieve a source or explain a failure. Authority concerns what it can change: edit a notebook, start a process, approve a deployment or submit an order. Increasing one dimension does not require increasing the other.

Our analytical framework: capability and authority are independent design choices
WorkflowUseful capabilityAuthority to check
Research assistantFinds and compares evidenceRead and save research
Strategy development agentWrites code and investigates test failuresEdit code; bounded test execution
Order proposal agentBuilds an inspectable proposalPrepare proposal; no submission until approved
Deployed strategyRuns customer-approved decision logicConfigured automatic execution

This is an editorial classification, not a tested product ranking. It prevents an unhelpful inference: a system that can place trades has not thereby demonstrated better research. Conversely, a research agent with no execution access can remove meaningful operational work.

Follow one bounded task from question to evidence

Consider the illustrative request: “Explain why this strategy’s result deteriorates when costs are included.” Begin with a frozen strategy version, dataset identifier and test configuration. The agent should inspect the cost assumptions and trade frequency, then propose a check whose output could distinguish a genuine effect from a configuration error.

A useful record would show the original result, the changed input, the regenerated result and the unresolved limitations. If the dataset cannot be accessed, the right output is a statement of that limitation with a request for the necessary artifact. Guessing the commission schedule would turn an investigation into a story. This example is a proposed evaluation task; we have not measured an agent’s success rate on it.

Inspect the harness surrounding the model

The model is only part of the operating system. Anthropic’s current oversight discussion identifies the model, harness, tools and environment as distinct components; it also highlights risks from misread intent and prompt injection. Its publication is first-party technical guidance, not independent evidence about trading outcomes. [2]

For a trading task, inspect the practical contracts between these components. Does “no positions” mean a verified empty account or a failed account request? Is a timestamp the source publication time or merely the retrieval time? Can a tool start a chargeable run without a budget? Does a returned order identifier prove acceptance, execution or neither? These questions are more revealing than counting specialist agents.

Require an evidence contract for every consequential output

We propose an evidence contract with four fields: the question answered; the inputs and versions used; the actions actually observed; and the conclusion’s scope. A research note should make it possible to find its original sources. A test report should identify the code and data that generated it. An order proposal should identify the account, instrument and current assumptions.

W3C’s provenance work supplies a general vocabulary for records of data, the activities that produced them and the responsible parties. Provenance supports inspection; it does not make an assertion true. A perfectly recorded calculation can still use the wrong units or an unsuitable model. [3]

The practical implication is to check the substance behind a citation. An accessible source may support a general concept while failing to support the agent’s specific market conclusion. Record that distinction rather than treating the mere presence of a link as a pass.

Compare against a process you can already assess

Start with tasks whose expected boundaries are known. Give both the agent and your existing process the same inputs. Include an ordinary case, missing data, a conflicting source and a failed tool call. Specify beforehand what counts as completion and what requires abstention. Retain failures alongside successes.

Measure completed, verifiable work and the operator effort required to check it. Time saved is less informative if the agent omits the expensive checks. Compare the quality of a corrected artifact as well as the apparent fluency of the explanation. Our proposed evaluation does not supply a numeric pass threshold: an acceptable error budget depends on the consequence of the task.

Change one important dependency and repeat: a model version, tool response or account-state snapshot. A changed result may be justified, but the operator should be able to explain it. Reproducibility here means preserving the evaluation conditions and recording variability, not assuming identical language on every run.

Where the evidence stops

The architecture literature explains how to build and supervise tool-using systems. It does not establish that agents discover persistent trading advantages. More planning can introduce delay, more tool calls can add cost, and several agents can share the same mistaken premise. Specialist roles should be justified by a measurable task benefit. [1]

Human confirmation is also a limited control. A person cannot meaningfully check a proposal that hides its sizing assumptions or uses stale account state. A successful demonstration cannot establish the behaviour of a process through every restart, broker rejection or market discontinuity. Use the risk-controls guide for the separate question of enforcing operational boundaries.

Apply the distinction to VC Trader AI

Vanquish Capital Technologies describes VC Trader AI as an agentic trading operations platform connecting specialist agents, a proprietary harness, persistent market intelligence, Python research, cloud backtesting and managed MT5 operations. These are first-party product descriptions checked against the local website source on 22 October 2026; this article does not report an independent platform benchmark.

Its two execution paths should be evaluated separately: an agent-proposed order requires individual confirmation, while a customer-approved deployed strategy may execute automatically. Approval of a strategy is a different grant of authority from approval of one proposal. Review the platform harness and the Python-to-MT5 workflow with that distinction in mind.

The defensible conclusion is modest and useful: evaluate an agent by a bounded task, inspectable evidence and explicit permissions. Treat any claim of improved trading performance as a separate empirical claim requiring its own evaluation.

Sources and scope
